I mostly agree. But if the far-right wackaloons appear to be guiding, or dominating, discourse on the right, then we need to point out this fact. If the Republicans continue to be the party of perpetual childhood and infantilism-by-choice, then this fact needs to be pointed out; and we may have to go on refuting at least some of their insane arguments.
In the case of evolution, for example, Louisiana still has a creationist governor, who is now being seriously discussed as a possible Presidential candidate in 2012 (as an alternative to Palin, who's both a far-right wacko and still central within the GOP); and creationists are still infiltrating school boards and pushing their fake religion into science curricula at every opportunity. So we can't start ignoring the loonies yet.
Also, we on the progressive left need to go out of our way to talk to ordinary less-educated Americans, if we're to have any hope of dislodging any of the asinine ideas that have been drummed into their heads by reactionary hucksters.
