I don't remember if anyone has actually quotably said it, but I remember the idea I heard explained that religion is and always will be about the realm of things unexplainable and untestable by scientific method, because as soon as a thing can be tested, it becomes the domain of science and the natural world. It no longer carries the power of the religious experience to make people believe the laws of nature can be suspended, but is merely another mundane item in our mundane world.
I think it's a feature, not a bug, and hopefully if everyone could accept that part, then we wouldn't have those kinds of frustrating discussions you mentioned.
