A key element of religion is faith, which requires believing in what can't be seen, touched or proven. Any logical argument or scientific evidence falls apart in the eyes of the believer. Does it make sense? Nope. But that's faith for you.

I'm not sure aethism is an evolutionary step any more than religion is or isn't. Both simply are for me, though I understand the appeal of the existence a higher power and life beyond death.
