From an email sent by my mother:

Grammy Raymond does not want you to go to Japan, they stick bamboo up people's fingernails, it won't be safe. I didn't have the heart to tell her that stuff doesn't really go on anymore as a rule, I just told her I wouldn't let you go and she was happy that I'm a good mother.

I... don't even know what to say. My great-grandmother is the funniest woman in the world.

I thought it was a different country that did the bamboo torture. Thinking Vietnam for some reason.
