Yanked from [personal profile] sunreon .

Pick a character I write, and I will give you the top five ideas/concepts/other I keep in mind while writing that character that I believe are essential to depicting them accurately.

I forgive people when they can no longer hurt me, either because it's no longer in their nature or because they have been forcibly removed from my life. Then I'm cool with them, either way.

However, I never forget. I've said it before and I'll say it again. People who pressure you to "forgive and forget" are just hoping for another opportunity to hurt you, or at the very least they don't value your right to prevent it. Anybody who really respects your right to protect yourself will never ask you to pretend an injury didn't happen (such as how you've been hurt in the past and by whom) for the benefit of their feelings. In that situation what they're really asking you to do is to make yourself more likely to be hurt similarly in the future so that they don't have to hurt now.

And... uh... no.

People have told me I have good people skills.

Other people phrase this differently. They say I'm manipulative. Perhaps they believe that I'm corralling them into terrible little destiny-destroying social boxes of doom. Perhaps they believe that my political games are so complex, thorough, and generally arcane that they are willing to attribute any misfortune to my meddling.

Sure, I misunderstand you terribly. Sure, the only reason everybody else happens to misunderstand you in exactly the same way is that I have poisoned them against you.

Some people feel that I've used my mistaken understanding of them to twist the whole universe against them. What people don't seem to want to think about is this: I can't manipulate you if I don't understand you.

Maybe it's possible to manipulate a person without grokking them on some kind of meaningful level, but that's not how I operate.

Accuse me of using my understanding of you to tear your life apart. Accuse me of misunderstanding you, and acting mistakenly. Please, though, don't accuse me of these things simultaneously. Your awed and horrified faith in my ability to corrupt and assimilate the people around me is touching, truly, but it's not really realistic.

Maybe you're just an asshole, and maybe I'm just the one who finally made a convincing argument to that end.

I guess it's a painful thing to think about, that someone can understand you and not like you. We cling as long as we can to the desperate hope that if "they" only understood where we were coming from, if "they" only understood what we were really thinking, that "they" would love us as much as we love ourselves.

Not always gonna happen, people. Sometimes people will understand you pretty well, and sometimes... you'll wish they didn't. Who knows, perhaps they'll be wishing it, too.
xenologer: (specious argument)
Sometimes I wish that people would believe I'm qualified to make statements about the subject of my Bachelor's Thesis. I specifically studied authority in online roleplaying communities. I should be their motherfucking expert consultant.

To be more clear...

Dear Hidden Realms:

CC: TGC, Unicorn's Visions, Terrawin, and everywhere else I have been that has decided I'm a nitpicking troublemaker with no respect for proper forum-staff authority:

I spent a year studying the use of authority in online communities. I satisfied the conditions for a research grant and wrote my Bachelor's Thesis on the subject. When I tell you that your behavior is causing X or Y among your members, or that X or Y member is or isn't making a valid point, understand that I am not merely coming to the discussion as a member. I am coming to the discussion as an administrator of three roleplaying forums with very different social climates, and as a scholar who has done research in this area.

Keep this in mind if you are not drawing on years of study into the dynamics of a community and formal anthropological theory regarding authority, its uses, and the reactions of those who do not have authority to those who do. We both have personal background experience with running forums, but odds are only one of us actually has some notable qualifications in the area as well.

In short, if we disagree, you're going to have to actually make a sensible argument to convince me. I will not assume that you know better than I do without one.

So start thinking and expressing, kids.

Love and peace,

Ashley

P.S. I am no longer amused by your tendency to make me staff out of respect for my alleged insight, evenhandedness, and honesty and then to rapidly decide you hate me because I'm examining your behavior the way you were hoping I'd examine everyone else's for your benefit. I had no idea there were so many of you out there.

xenologer: (it are fact)
I keep joining these message boards that are full of people who, despite all their blustering about thinking for themselves, are not actually very good at it. Their political affiliation is such an ingrained part of their identity that there are many things they simply do not need to consider, many facts that cannot possibly be relevant.

And I get tired of hunting these posts down and reposting them. Hopefully putting it up here will make it easier for me to copy-paste this every damn time. The latest discussion was about why electing Creationists to public office is a bad idea, so you'll see some hints of that topic in here.

Cut for length. )

I'm trying out a new poetic form (since I'm not ready for villanelles just yet), so here's one in terza rima. Yes, I'm a lazy slant-rhyming whore.

I wonder why some things get posted
That we all know no one wants to read
The author thinks we're so engrossed and
Can't critique for there's no need.
The real problem here is apathy
Not their poetic style or creed.
If there were something good to see
Perhaps the doggerel would get help
And we'd improve their writing for free
Instead of ignoring untalented whelps.

And yes, in case you were wondering, there is a lot of bad poetry getting posted on RP forums. If I'd wanted to spend more than five minutes mocking these people, I would have tried my hand at the big one. Villanelles. D:

I can't post this to the forum in question, since I don't really want to discourage them from writing. The best way to get better is to be bad for a while and keep working. At the same time... I had to post it somewhere because I got a giggle out of writing it. And now, pizza!

So on HiddenRealms, this RP forum I frequent, the staffers couldn't decide with any speed whether it was okay to play a clearly-derivative character as long as it fit well into the setting, or whether the obviousness of the original source material could disqualify it on its own.

I found it immensely frustrating that they were spending more time defending themselves and their good intentions than actually coming to a decision, so I forced them to come to one. I apped a character who's about as close as you can get to Greg House without actually being Greg House. Everyone knew I was doing it and the staff was pissed. But they agreed to approve him and the choice was made.
