National Day of Silence

The National Day of Silence is a day to give a nod to the silence that LGBT people--particularly students--have to live with for fear of bullying, harassment, and even violence. They have to be silent every day of their lives, so today their allies are silent just for one day.

I've done the Day of Silence for a few years now, and it didn't seem like a big thing to me until one of my gay friends realized that I was deliberately not talking, was surprised, and then gave me what might be the most heartfelt thanks I've ever received from anybody. That kind of stopped me in my tracks, because I had to wonder how much shit has she gotten from people, how alone has she been made to feel, that me not talking for a day has such a huge impact for her?

Since then, I've always tried to do this thing. I didn't realize it meant so much, and I still probably don't really "get it," but if it helps, then it's the least I can do, y'know?

This is more or less unworkable when you work from (telecommuting only) and your other job is to take care a 3 year old who won't accept anything but a verbal reply. But I have noted it, I think it's an important gesture, and when I am dealing with the outside world, I'll observe.

Having a three year old makes it a hell of a lot trickier, yeah. And the job thing can be tough. I'm not actually working today, or I'd probably have to not observe (since I work in progressive activism and will probably do more objective good by continuing to speak with people than I will by my silence).

So I feel you on the limitations. I just happen to be able to do it this year, so I'm taking my chance to participate.

Mind you, it's not lost on me that LGBT people don't get to decide when it's convenient to be silent...

I didn't know about the Day of Silence thing, but it is an impressive idea. I don't know if I'd be able to pull it off myself-- I'd prefer a day of wearing a particular token to show support or something like that... but anyway, thanks for letting me know-- I'll keep it in mind for the future.
