People don't like being told truthful but "negative" things. People like to be mollycoddled. It's a warmer, squishier feeling than taking responsibility for your emotions/actions/future.
I know this from personal experience! It's not right but it's an amazing incentive: politicians pander to your ickle feelings and they get votes. Everyone thinks they win.
