I'm also really offended by the very common (and repeated both in your post and in the comments) belief on the part of non-religious people that the ONLY reasons people could possibly be religious are rooted in fear. That's profoundly contemptuous of another person's conscience and intellect. Why should I even bother to explain my most profound, life-touchstone ideas about the world to someone who presumes that about me right off the bat?
