My first entry about Iraq is not about Iraq...go figure.

It is commonly-said that those who fail to study history are doomed to repeat it.

I think it is also fair to say that those who study history must caution themselves... and beware of forgetting one. simple. thing.

New events take place. Paradigms change. To say that there is nothing new under the sun is to deny the variation of human behavior.

To say that Iraq is another Vietnam is both apt and a gross oversimplification.

To say that Iraq is another Vietnam is a both a warning and a warning sign.

Nothing is just another _______. The similarities are unsettling, but going too far with statements like that is something I'm trying to be careful of when forming my own opinions.

Similarities may be striking, but hindsight only gets you so far if you aren't looking in front of you first and foremost.
