For those wanting to know more about the recent DDoS attacks, yes, it looks like it was the Russian government trying to shut down the dissidents again.

As I said last time, while it's frustrating not to have access, LJ is a lot more than a social network platform. From the article:

"LiveJournal isn’t just a social network. It’s also a platform for organizing civic action. Dozens of network projects and groups mobilize people to solve specific problems — from defending the rights of political prisoners to saving endangered historic architecture in Moscow."

So while I know many are considering the move over to Dreamwidth and other such sites, supporting LJ is a way we can help support those who use it for more than a writing/roleplaying/social venue.

Also, as a FYI, LJ is giving paid users effected by the outage two weeks of paid time as compensation.

I think I just finished one of the best books I've ever read. How did you do that, Alden Bell? How did you do it in a zombie novel?

This wasn't the book I bought recently that I thought might make me remember something about myself. Hell do I know anyway. I feel like even recommending this book might be more intimate and revealing than is necessary or wise, but I might as well do it anyway in case somebody else finds it, too.

[livejournal.com profile] admnaismith, I'm thinking of you for some reason. I don't know if it's because I think you'll at least guess at what I spotted in there, or if it's just because I know you can chew through a lot of books pretty quickly, and my next book is even from one of your lists. I don't know what you'd think of this one, but I'd lay pretty good odds that you'll at least see what I saw.

I'm going to get some sleep, if I can after that.

So apparently members of LJ's staff have been using their position to view and comment on locked entries to harass members. People have had their LJ accounts suspended and everything over this nonsense.

Theoretically I'm taking a bit of a risk by linking to this post, but honestly... wtf ever. I'm already crossposting everything, and I've ported everything over to DW anyway. I lose nothing if they do that.

If anybody wants an invite code to DW, hit me up on this entry over there. There's a link below. I'm not going to stop posting to LJ or anything, but I do already post all my entries over there, and I've found a lot of really great social commentary stuff on DW that isn't here, so I'm actually using my reading list! I'm actually getting to the point where I have some stuff set up on DW, and that's exciting.

Don't worry, I'm not ragequitting or anything. But I am over on DW, and once again... LJ keeps running down my resolve to stay. For purely selfish reasons I want as much of my awesome LJ community to also be over there by the time this happens.

LiveJournal is going to set it up so that you can't cross-post comments on a locked entry at all, even though now you can and it'll link to the entry in question.

We knew that if we kicked a big enough fit, they'd backpedal on this. I'm getting a little tired of "let's use people's privacy to betatest our shit because we can't be arsed to consider these things or ask our users beforehand."

I'm not going to leave LJ over this, but with each screwup I get closer and closer. At this point I think it's largely inevitable that eventually I'll be at DW instead. As a result, I'm going to continue cross-posting to keep my two journals linked so that when that time comes, I'll have laid enough groundwork that I won't be leaving much behind.

So yeah. There's an update for you on the cross-posting nonsense.

Stealing [livejournal.com profile] rm's summary here.

[livejournal.com profile] bifemmefatale's 16-year-old daughter has run away from home in the Chicago-area. She is currently believed to be heading towards a Rainbow Gathering in Carbondale, IL.

Her family is very worried about her. If you can take a moment to take a look at this picture and keep an eye out for her, that would be good.

So yeah. From what other people have posted, evidently those are the only clothes she has, and there's been suggestion she might be begging for change. This kind of LJ networking has worked before, so please repost this for the sake of the people on your F-list who haven't already seen it.

Thanks all, and take care of yourselves.

Okay, so. I am having a hard time keeping straight all of the people on LJ that also have accounts on DW. So... halp?

Please to be posting on my DW with who you are on LJ? Then I can add you and give you access, hooray!

Hat tip to [personal profile] rm for linking this bit of news.

Apparently LJ has made a deal to integrate more with Facebook, which is probably why they're not going to actually remove this feature. It's possible that they'll tweak the whole "locked posts" thing, but yeah. Someone evidently found this by translating a Russian news article, and not because Livejournal actually said anything.

I've been resisting joining the "omg Livejournal are sellouts" crowd, but I would like to repeat that I have Dreamwidth codes for anybody who wants them. The more of us there are over there, the easier it is for everybody to go someplace less ridiculous.

On that subject, does anybody who uses DW know if I can set up a feed on my DW reading list to continue watching communities here?
xenologer: (Default)
So LJ now has the option to repost entries and comments to entries to Facebook, with a link to the original source. This is not a problem for me at all, except that doing so still works with a locked entry. If I post a locked or protected entry on Livejournal and you comment, I would never ask you not to reproduce your own words elsewhere. However, I don't want links to my locked entries showing up on Facebook. Like many of us, I would like to keep my family, bosses, and potential bosses from accessing my LJ the way they can access content on my Facebook.

So let's have an agreement here, okay? Please don't do this to me, I won't do this to you, and if you can let LJ know how we feel I'd appreciate it.

Livejournal is seriously running me out of excuses not to move to Dreamwidth. This is very sad, as I didn't want to abandon what I've established here on LJ. Related: I do have invite codes if anybody wants them.

Back in the long long ago, in the beforetime, [livejournal.com profile] kingofdoma asked me meme-questions here. The whole answering and fulfilment bit of this kept not occurring, but now it will!

1. What is your favourite novel?

Right now? I'm going to say Ender's Game, even though its author is a gay-hating fundie prick that you should never ever ever give money to, no matter what.

2. Pick a treasured person in your life, and tell me what you'd say for their eulogy.

Come on. Who'd you think I'd pick? Assuming I'd be there for it, anyway.

[livejournal.com profile] archmage_brian. He was everything that matters.

3. If you could go back in time and take a tire iron to any major philosopher, who would you bludgeon senseless, and why?

Kierkegaard. Because FUCK YOU Kierkegaard, that's why. Abraham's God made me do it.

4. What is your biggest problem with me? What about me would you have me change or at least look at more critically?

My biggest problem with you? Oh, dude. We hashed that over and discussed it and settled it years ago. I mean actual, literal, 360-something-day-long years. It will probably take you long thought to even remember wtf I'm talking about, which should be a clue as to how much bad blood there's ever really been between us.

If I wanted you to change who you were now? I wouldn't be friends with you.

5. Let's say you can only drink one brand of beer for all eternity. What brand is that, and what about it earns your eternal devotion?

Oh, hm. Off the top of my head? Kingfisher. It's a very lagery lager, and goes well with food or on a hot day without it.

This is from [livejournal.com profile] daisymaeevans, and I appreciated the fact that she posted it. I know there are a couple of people on my LJ who deserve to read it, too, so I'm passing it on. If you know someone who deserves this nice surprise, give it to them.

I don’t care if people think you’re fat.

If you are kind, generous and quick to forgive I don’t care what your scale says.

If you can create a dress, a song, a quilt, a scarf, a cake or a story I don’t care what size you wear.

If you can discuss current events, science, history, art and literature with knowledge and passion I don’t care how much ice cream you ate.

If you are a loyal friend who is always there for me when I need you and is not afraid to lean on me when you need me then I will put my arms around however much of you there is and never let go.

I don’t care what you look like. The important things always outweigh anything else.

So you go have a good day, and remember this.
