In my opinion, there is a time and a place to be an asshole.

They're an asshole.

So go dole out assholery to those who deserve it and in the defense of people who need it, or else be found wanting by an even bigger asshole than you.

Yes, I am talking about cowardice.

Being concerned about other people's feelings is a good thing, but there is a time and place to throw empathy out the door and kick someone in the face (only verbally, of course =P) for their fuckups. Anybody who is too concerned about coddling/enabling said fuckup is the real asshole in the situation.

Which doesn't mean they should be dependent on you to be the heavy every time.

Sometimes, I've been the one making a scene when I found it warranted, and been scorned and tut-tutted by Civilized People With Manners for it. Sometimes, I've looked around for backup while it was happening, and seen them cringing at a safe distance while giving me a furtive thumb-up. Sometimes, that's all I need, to keep going. Sometimes it better be all I need, 'cause it's usually all I'm going to get.

If that's what you're going through these days, I guess I understand.

There are times when someone says or does something so offensive, so wrong, so totally unacceptable that responding to them in a way that suggests they are being reasonable is similarly unacceptable. Sometimes the appropriate response IS to curse them out and call them a terrible human being - not to calmly debate with them
