TW: Game of Thrones is 40% good and 60% racist hilaribad

We've had convos in my journal before about racist Eurocentric fantasy and so I obviously knew what I was getting into with Game of Thrones but oh my god

nobody warned me about the "thank you" thing

"I do not know how to say thank you in Dothraki." "There is no word for thank you in Dothraki."

I mean aside from her clearly beginning the process of civilizing the hypersexual violent darkie savage with her magic white poontang of compassion and reason... can we just spend a minute and sit with THE DOTHRAKI DO NOT HAVE A WORD FOR THANK YOU

they do not have that

I like the female characters, and knew I would. It's just pretty clear that they're only for white people. ALSO I get the feeling that with all George RR Martin's ingenuity with tormenting his characters, the only misery he can think of for women is sexual violence just over and over and over. I keep wanting to get myself to a place of willful enjoyment, but all I can think about are the following two things:

1. It's pretty sad that fantasy boards that are blatant rip-offs of this setting and plot constitute progress in the land of Misogynist Whitelandia roleplaying. How fuckin' sad.

2. the dothraki do not have a word for thank you

Thank goodness for the Lannisters. I don't think I could deal with this without their smarmy behinds. No word for thank you. What the shit. halp

*** MAY CONTAIN 5TH BOOK SPOILERS***

Not really.

Breynne - Had to deal with sexual violence perhaps once or twice. Most of the violence she dealt with was pure and physical. She gets into fights, brawls, half her face gets chewed off.

Caitlyn - The only two men sexually interested in her are her husband, and the guy who's been in love with her since they were kids. She face no sexual violence.

Arya - Even after she stops pretending to be a boy (for obvious reasons), she's not threatened in sexual manners.

There are many more examples that I'll be glad to type out in case of need.

But all of these are not to say sexual or sexual-related torment doesn't exist in GRR Martin's world. It' always there, looming, part of the backstories, mentioned in by the way kind of facts, almost like the air the characters breathe. But it' far from being the only or even the main form of torture he has in store for female characters.

>racist Eurocentric fantasy

I wonder how that could have got into GoT?

I don't think GoT is Martin's best work. Sandkings is an amazing story.

As a linguistics major, that whole "They do not have a word for ___ in their language" drives me nuts, because while it's true some concepts may have an elegant one-word expression in one language that requires more words to express in another, the idea that some people might be incapable of expressing a concept in their language is BS, for reasons that linguist Geoffrey Pullum has covered repeatedly.

This is why I don't read anything written by defaults (white straight cis neurotypical nondisabled men) anymore. It's just not worth it -- there's too much stuff that's way better, especially in sci-fi and speculative fiction.
